For whatever reason I liked this one much more than I did the last volume, even though yeah, the story doesn't really move ahead by much. I think that's the thing though--I don't even really care all that much about the main plot line when the side stories entertain me, and I found there was a lot of interest in this particular collection, and I was reminded of why I liked this series so much when I first started reading it. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the final two volumes.
Here on earth by Alice Hoffman was fantastic. I read it for seven straight hours & i never once wanted to put it down. This book involves a girl about my age (16) and a women about 35 i believe, and they have to go back her old hometown. & in the little hometown many unexpected series of events happen.
A collection of 2 short stories that took less than an hour to read (glad I didn't actually by the book) Usual Cecelia Ahern material (a bit away with the fairies!!) but I liked the first story more than the second.
Better than book 2, but not as good as books 1 or 3. I'm not a fan of "super powers" even in a fantasy book, because it always begs the question of why they wouldn't use it more. So I don't really like that they brought back a character from the dead at the end of book 3, but I do like that while the power is definitely "super", it has flaws and limits and you can see why it would not be abused/used too much. I missed not having several of the main characters in this book. It felt more like a made for TV sequel in the sense that it departed from the main characters and played off side characters from the main storyline of the first three books. As with book 2, it dragged at times and felt mostly like the whole book was just to set up the next good book. However, it did a better job than book 2 in keeping the storyline interesting with some of the main characters and there were a few main characters that met their doom. I'm looking forward to book 5 and hoping that he does a better job of setting up book 6 while bringing home the punch that is expected with the setup from book 4. I will be very disappointed if book 6 turns out to be another pure setup book for book 7 like the first two even-numbered books have been.
Saying this is my least favorite Chabon novel sounds too ungenerous. It is a good book and has the Chabon trademarks of quality, but it didn't affect me the way his other books have. It's a little disappointing as I felt the pairing of two of my interests - Raymond Chandler and Yiddish - treated by one of my favorite authors, would result in my most favorite book ever. That being said, the book still made me laugh a lot and had many intriguing ideas.
