This wonderfully written book tells the story of an family coming to grips with the death of a wayward brother, Liam. Narrated by the sister, Veronica, the book covers three generations of the Hegarty clan, linking the transgressions of the past to the events contributing to Liam's death. Enright delivers a powerful, intelligent novel, filled with fury and grief as she writes of betrayal and redemption in a dysfunctional family.
A heartwarming story, centered on the character of Lucky, who's about to turn 11. She and the younger Miles are going to have a big birthday celebration with all the residents of their desert town of Hard Pan (population 43). The town may be small, but it's full of Old Desert Rat Characters, and lots of love. Lucky's still trying to figure out who she is and how she feels about life. When the 'ologists arrive to do their scientific work, and they bring along a girl of Lucky's age, she realizes she needs a girlfriend, and maybe doesn't need her old friend Lincoln who knows how to tie knots so well, he may up and leave Hard Pan for England to win some silly knot competition. When Lucky gets stuck down an old well, and Lincoln is there to rescue her, Lucky again learns what true friends are all about, and why her town and the Old Desert Rat Characters in it are what makes life special. A real nugget of a book, to go alongside the first, The Higher Power of Lucky. I'm looking forward to the next in this trilogy!
I was excited to read this because I like Whistling in the Dark so much. And while I still like her writing style and she does a good job with the story and making her characters real. I didn't like some of the things going on in the story. But, then I suppose it wouldn't be much fun to have no surprises. Good, not great.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a breath of fresh air. A bunch of fun and fluff that really made me feel like I was on holiday from all the fantasy books I always read. I would've given this book 5 stars but then there was no WOW factor for me. I mean, I did greatly enjoy it but it did not have that extra something to startle me or make me really think. But I guess I shouldn't expect much from a book of the chick-lit genre. The main character; however, brought so much life to the book. She gave this sort of energy and spark that I usually don't see in heroines of other books. Her thoughts are usually a disorganized mess, and that's why it is all so funny. She is approachable and lovable and will be a character that I would remember for a very long time. The events in the book were funny and sometimes crazy but they kept me hooked. Although it had no WOW factor for me, it is a book that I still enjoyed very much. Reading this book is like eating sugar and fluff and sometimes, that's exactly what a bookworm, like me, needs.
